최근 샘 오취리가 의정부 고등학교 학생들이 관짝소년단을 패러디해 졸업사진을 찍은 것을 두고 인스타 그램을 이용해 글을 남겼다. 네티즌은 이를 두고 국문과 영문의 내용이 다른 점, 영문에만 교육과 무지를 언급한 점, teakpop을 태그 해 의도적으로 비난하려고 한 점, 의정부고 학생들이 비하를 의도하지 않았다는 점 , 오히려 당사자들을 재밌게 받아들였다는 점 등 많은 이유로 반박했다. 유명인이 더 강한 힘을 가지는 만큼 샘 오취리가 좀 더 성숙한 자세로 글을 썼다면 더 좋았을 것이다. 하지만 샘 오취리의 의도, 잘못과 별개로 그래서 우리는 어떻게 받아 들어야 하는가에 대해 이야기하고 싶다.
블랙페이스는 흑인에게 어떤 의미일까?
블랙페이스는 minstrel show에서 백인이 얼굴을 검게 칠하여 흑인 노예를 희화화하여 흑인의 일반적인 모습처럼 보여지게 하는 것에서 시작했고 이후에도 많은 백인이 쇼에서 얼굴을 검게 칠하여 흑인을 희화화했다(당시 쇼에 흑인이 출연할 수 없었다고 함). NMAAHC에 따르면 게으르고, 멍청하고, 겁이 많고 성욕이 많은 사람으로 묘사됐다고 한다. 흑인에게 블랙페이스는 차별의 역사이자 그것을 지속시킨 힘인 것이다.

물론 우리는 샘 오취리가 쓴 글이 불편하게 느껴질 수 있다. 샘 오취리가 우리나라를 망신주기 위해 쓴 글이라고 느껴질 수도 있다(그런 의도는 아니었을 것이라고 희망하며 생각한다).
하지만 어떻게 우리가 반응하는지에 따라 우리나라의 위상이 높아질 수 있다. 성숙하게 비판하고 받아들이는 것이 우리나라의 위상을 진짜 높이는 것이라고 생각한다. 일부 댓글에는 너는 동양인 비하해 놓고 왜 우리에게 그러냐, 당사자도 뭐라고 안 하는데 왜 네가 그러냐, 한국인이 만만하냐, 너네 나라로 가라 등 원색적인 비난이 많았다. 하지만 우리가 불편하게 느낀 점을 냉정하게 말하되 우리도 블랙페이스가 불편한 것이라고 깨닫고 개선해 나가야겠다 라는 마음가짐을 갖는 것이 중요하다. 물론 관짝소년단을 패러디할때 나쁜 의도를 갖고 한 것은 아니지만 흑인 역사에 블랙페이스가 아픈 것이라면 우리도 하지 않으려고 노력해야 한다.
동양인을 비하할 때 사용하는 눈을 찢는 행동이 아무리 순수한 마음에서 나와 정성 들여 눈을 찢는다 하더라도, 동양인 입장에서는 그저 인종차별일 뿐이다. 내가 순수하게 눈을 찢었는데 왜 그러냐고 할 필요는 없다. 차별이라는 것은 다수에 속한 사람들에게는 느끼기 어려운 것이다. 소수에 속해 있을 때 비로소 알게 된다. 샘 오취리가 어떤 의도로 글을 작성했는지 확실하게 알 수 없으나, 그의 글이 불편하더라도 그 속에서 핵심을 찾고 우리가 어떻게 개선할 수 있을지 찾는 것이 좀 더 바람직하지 않을까?
Recently, Sam Okyere commented his opinion about parody of Uijeongbu high school graduation photos in blackface on his instagram. Netizens criticize that he commented two different contents between Korean and English, he mentioned education and ignorance only in English part, tagged teakpop on purpose, Uijeongbu high school students didn’t mean any racism, even the person directly involved enjoyed the parody. Since he is popular, it would have been better if he had written it in more good ways. But I would like to talk about how we can accept his opinion regardless of his intention or faults.
What is the Meaning of Blackface for Black?
The origins of blackface date back to the minstrel shows of mid-19th century. White performers darkened their skin with polish and cork, put on tattered clothing and exaggerated their features to look stereotypically "black."The first minstrel shows mimicked enslaved Africans on Southern plantations, depicting black people as lazy, ignorant, cowardly or hypersexual, according to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Blackface is the history of racial discrimination and the power to continue it.

Of course, we can feel uncomfortable with sam’s comment. We can feel that Sam did it on purpose to humiliate us(I hope and think he didn’t have that kind of intention).
However, how we react against on the criticism can raise our status. Maturely criticize and accept different opinion can raise our status and global reputation. Some netizens blamed him like “Do you have rights to say so while you also did slant-eye gesture to disrespect Asians”, “Why did you say so even the person involved enjoyed the parody”, “Go do your country”, “Do you think Korean is so kind and easy?”. But what is important is to say what we felt from his comment in a good way, and understand what and why they feel uncomfortable about it and improve it. I also know that students didn’t mean anything bad, but if blackface hurts them, we should care it and try not to do it.
Some people are too innocent and ignorant so that they gesture slant-eye in a nice way, when Asian see it, it is just a racism. Don’t have to say “I did it with a good intention” Discrimination is hard to feel for those in the majority. You only know when you are in a minority. I am not sure what Sam intended, but even if his writing is uncomfortable, wouldn't it be more desirable to find the point in it and how we can improve it?
